Nick prowled through the house restlessly. Despite his most persuasive arguments, Emily had gone to work, but she’d promised to consider a short holiday. In the meantime, he was searching for evidence of his identity.

It was curious, he thought. He liked the house and felt utterly comfortable there. In fact, he couldn’t imagine why he’d ever told Emily he didn’t like it.

Pretty soon he’d be dividing himself between the “old Nick” and the “new Nick.” So far, he didn’t especially care for the old Nick. It seemed like the only thing he’d done right was marry Emily.

As for his identity…that seemed a little thin. Apparently he didn’t accumulate many belongings. His clothes hung in the closet, and there were masculine products in the bathroom. And not much else.

In the backyard he found a ladder lying on the ground, with tools and shingles on the roof above. Nick lifted the ladder with a sense of relief. Something to do. He might as well put his “vacation” to good use. His foot was on the first rung when the phone rang.

He muttered a single expletive and strode inside the house. “Yes?” he answered.

“Uh…it’s me. How are you doing?”

“Oh. Hi, Angel. I’m keeping busy.” Nick winced. He couldn’t tell her he planned to finish the roof—she’d pitch a fit.

“I’m sorry about this morning,” she said, sounding breathless. “I’ve talked to Gladys. She’ll be happy to cover the store for me. But I need to take care of some things—it’ll take most of the afternoon.”

“That’s fine.”

“I left the photo albums out. They-might trigger some memories.”

Nick nudged the stack of albums, strategically placed on the breakfast table. Emily wanted his amnesia cured almost as much as he did. And, while it seemed perfectly natural she’d want her husband back with his memory intact, it bothered him just the same.

“Okay,” Nick agreed, though he doubted it would help. “I’ll go through them. See you later.”

He sat down and opened a large one marked “Emily’s Baby Book.” On the first page was a traditional babyin-the-bathwater shot. He smiled, then laughed when he saw her clad in a clown costume for Halloween. She was adorable.

He fixed himself a cup of coffee and continued through the album. It was intriguing, especially since he couldn’t help thinking about his own child. And an unexpected thought occurred to him. A girl. He’d like to have a little girl, just like her mother.

The various books progressed through Emily’s childhood, and somewhere in the middle a gawky little boy appeared, with hands and feet too big for his body, and eyes that looked hungrily at everyone else, especially Emily. It didn’t take a lot of conjecture to realize the gawky kid was himself.

“Angel,” he murmured, touching the plastic-covered pages, “I was right, you became my family.”

They looked like nice people. Sometimes exasperated with each other, but full of fun and the pleasures of living. People he wanted to remember. They seemed familiar, similar to images from a subconscious dream.
